AAUW

The American Association of University Women promotes equity, lifelong education, and positive societal change for all women and girls. AAUW was founded in 1881 and is comprised of three organizations: the Association, Educational Foundation (EF), and Legal Advocacy Fund (LAF).

The ASSOCIATION is a 150,000 member organization with more than 1,500 branches throughout Guam, the Virgin Islands and the United States. AAUW’s EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION is the largest source of funding exclusively for graduate women in the world. It supports aspiring scholars around the globe, teachers and activists in local communities, women at critical stages of their careers, and those pursuing professions where women are underrepresented. AAUW’s LEGAL ADVOCACY FUND has supported 57 cases and contributed more than $600,000 to women seeking judicial redress for sex discrimination in higher education. LAF supports plaintiffs by providing financial assistance, legal advice, and counseling.

Hilo Branch (top)

AAUW Hilo Branch was founded in 1950 by fourteen women who established a stimulating program to support community service in secondary and higher education. Energetic fundraisers have enabled the Hilo Branch to award scholarships since 1954 to women at UH-Hilo and to make yearly monetary contributions to the Educational Foundation.

AAUW Hilo Branch is a 5-Star Branch. The honor is awarded to branches that are models of excellence in at least five of these seven criteria: Community Action, Public Policy, Membership, Educational Foundation, Legal Advocacy Fund, Visibility, and Leadership.

In 1999, the AAUW branches in the Hawaii-Pacific area successfully finished eight years of fundraising for a $100,000 endowment, the Hawaii-Pacific American Fellowship.
